Cultural Programs

Keeping traditions alive within the Chuukese community in Vancouver, WA

With ancestral practices and teachings, we empower our youth through a strong connection to their roots, preserving Chuukese culture for generations to come.

  • Language

Language is one of the foundations of a culture. Through language preservation, we keep our culture alive. In our language program, you can learn Chuukese from community elders—then go home and practice with your family!

  • Stories

Through traditional storytelling, we can provide a greater awareness of our history and where we come from. Understanding our origins through folklore is one of the best ways to understand ourselves. Our island stories help youth feel empowered in knowing their roots.

Traditions

Another great way to learn Chuukese is through song and dance. Our elders teach traditional songs and dances that carry the stories of our ancestors, creating a deeper connection with our culture. We also offer traditional sewing workshops that teach you how to craft traditional skirts and dresses.

Food is another powerful carrier of culture and tradition. That’s why we offer Chuukese food preparation courses, as well as traditional fire cooking workshops. This is a great way to reconnect with the land as our ancestors did.
